the gawdess diaries

Freudians might call this blog "the displacement diaries" due to my use of it as a defense mechanism against stupid people. It's a good thing to have a black hole in cyberspace to vent one's rage, although intelligent, sarcastic humor is an even better tool. Ahh, sweet silence!

topic: debunk your favorite campaign myths!

Here are a few websites that research the statements made by candidates and their campaigns, and then, well, call "bullshit" if need be. It works both ways...you'll be surprised!

FactCheck.org Annenberg Political Fact Check

http://www.factcheck.org/default.aspx

From the site's "About Us" section:
  • "...a nonpartisan, nonprofit, 'consumer advocate' for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics;"
  • "...monitor the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews, and news releases;"
  • "...goal is to apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding."

The Center for American Progress
http://www.americanprogress.org/site/c.biJRJ8OVF/b.8473/

Four Major Objectives from the site's "About Us" section:

  • developing a long term vision of a progressive America,
  • providing a forum to generate new progressive ideas and policy proposals,
  • responding effectively and rapidly to conservative proposals and rhetoric with a thoughtful critique and clear alternatives, and
  • communicating progressive messages to the American public.

"Every day we challenge conservative thinking that undermines the bedrock American values of liberty, community and shared responsibility."

Update 12/30/05:

The Daily Mis-Lead, "A Daily Chronicle of Bush Administration Distortion" was discontinued after the 2004 elections. You can sign up to receive updated news at http://civic.moveon.org/keepmeposted//

Moveon.org has continued to build a grass roots movement since November 2004. E-mail updates bring news of upcoming congressional votes and the means to contact your representatives in D.C. to voice your concerns and opinions.

OK, this last site leans one way ideologically...oh well, get over it! At least "The Misleader" cited their sources so you got both sides of the story.

the gawdess diaries

Monday, September 27, 2004

"the gawdess diaries" was created in 2004 out of frustration with the U.S. political process. Thank gawdess we still live in a democracy, although there are those out there who would love nothing more to turn it in to an "ameristocracy".

Despite my public school education, I still learned how to think critically. When I hear or read anything that just doesn't sit right, I tend to "question authority" and investigate. I use various web sites that provide both partisan and non-partisan news, views, and information. The commonality among all of these sites is that they all provide credible sources to back up the statements they make.

I want to know what others feel passionate about and would like to hear what you have to say. Personally, there are so many worthy causes to support that I am overwhelmed, so this blog is intended to be an outlet.

So with that said, WELCOME to the gawdess diaries!
